Summary: Lindapter Type AF clamps were used to secure a fall arrest system to the original riveted beams.

A fall arrest system was required to allow maintenance works and cleaning to be carried out to otherwise difficult to reach areas of the exhibition hall. The steel wire device had to be somehow attached to the listed structure’s iron arched trusses, without damaging the original steelwork. It was also critical that the safety system’s anchor point would easily support the weight of a man under sudden, dynamic load conditions.

Despite the fact that drilling or welding was not possible, the connection issue was swiftly overcome with the fall arrest system designed to utilise Lindapter Type AF high friction clamps. A bespoke assembly was manufactured and installed, safely securing the wire cable to the arched trusses at key points, allowing the wire to span from the side of the building, up and across to the centre of the roof. The anchor point is also held in place by an assembly of 4 Type AF fixings, providing the required strength whilst preserving the steelwork integrity.

The Lindapter Type AF is a high strength fixing for both friction and tension applications, supporting safe working frictional loads up to 35kN and up to 62.5kN tensile.
